Why I call it 'amazing'? Because I think this is the best escape so far.
Before I get you confused, let me clarify. I am talking about the Escape Room (2019) movie-the third in the raging trend of escape movies, but a sequel to none.

This movie is directed by Adam Robitel and is an American Psychological Thriller based on the concept of escape rooms. Unlike the previous two movies, this one is not of the paranormal or supernatural genre. This one is an exciting take in the category of psychological thrillers and is a definite watch for all.
The numbers speak in its favor too, as it grossed $155 million worldwide. With an excellent direction, incredible cast, mind-blowing puzzle room concepts, and a perfect mystery, this movie makes for a perfect weekend binge with friends and family.
If you are an Escape Room fan, this one will be your favorite. It is one of my top thriller movies, for sure.
What a Movie!
I came across this one while browsing Amazon Prime. Yes, it is there-another reason why the subscription is worth it.
It was a lazy weekend, and when I saw the name Escape Room on my screen, I was excited beyond measure. I had seen the previously released movies on a similar theme, but the poster looked more intriguing and less scary. It looked like a brain teaser and it was calling out to me.
I got ready with my bucket of popcorn, and it was time to watch this movie. What I didn't anticipate is that I was about to be totally amazed by it.
Similar to the 2018 movie, this one too brings random characters together for the game. But this time the characters were chosen very specifically.
They each receive a black box which, when unlocked, holds an invite to the Best Escape Room Game in the town. They call it the Most Immersive Escape Room Game. And it was immersive. It had me fully engrossed.
Solving the black box was their first game. The invite was revealed only for the ones who were worthy i.e., the ones who could solve the black box.
Then, the chosen six decided to make their life fun and enter this dark building, which apparently was the location of the game. It looked like an abandoned FBI building just like they show in web series.
There were six main characters who were chosen to play the game room:
Zoey, an introverted physics student.
Jason, a bright, confident, witty daytrader, minting money for his clients' day in and day out.
Ben, affected by the world of drugs and under-confident stockboys, who is trying to get on the right path and make a living.
Amanda, an ex-military veteran with a history of a fire massacre.
Mike, a truck driver with no exciting story in the beginning. But his history was soon to be revealed during the course of the movie.
Danny, a total nerd boy who has played 93 escape rooms. His aim is to beat this one.
As the game progresses, there are elements in each room that connect the player to his or her past. In due course, the truth is revealed. Why were they brought together?
How real does it get?
The escape room designs are realistic. Minus the violence and deadly parts, of course. Each room has a puzzle that keeps the audience immersed. You will be playing along, I am sure.
The rooms each have a theme. This is so much like a real escape room game.
The first room, which is the waiting room, turns out to be a big oven. The players discover the escape passage and climb out before the room is fired up.
Next, they find themselves in a winter cabin, which turns out to be a disaster for Danny. That is where the players realize this escape room is real. It is not just a game or a test of their skills.
Each room reveals the fear of one player and the strength of another. When the team played together, they did a superb job at solving the mystery. But one small failure of trust, and a life is lost.
By the end, it seems that just one player survives to meet the Gamemaster. The Gamemaster explains how each year they lure in players with something in common - college athletes, savants, etc. This whole game is conducted for the entertainment of wealthy viewers who bet on the result.
With this, the Gamemaster's fate sees an unexpected twist. The end of the movie makes things clear and somehow leaves you wanting for more. I'm so glad that the director saw that coming and announced a sequel to the movie.
Of course, the difference between a real-life escape room and the reel-escape room is that the movie has multiple rooms you must escape. Additionally, each of the rooms is deadlier than the other and has a different theme. However, in reality, you may choose just one theme and have one room to escape. At least in most places, it is like that.
If you know of another, do share in the comments below. I'd love to visit.
An Escape Room Trendsetter!
The amount this movie earned states how much this movie was loved and accepted. The idea of escape rooms is already a widely acknowledged and favored one in the audience. People flood these game rooms for unique experiences. The movie adds to the same. They get to pick similar themes and feel like a part of the movie.
After seeing this movie, I picked a winter cabin theme for me and my friends. We had some good fun and felt like the actors in a film.
The challenges used in the movie were good brain teasers. This is something you can always expect in an actual game room. Be it picture puzzles, music puzzles, word clues, or simply find the key games, they all make the experience more enjoyable.
Spoiler Alert: In the escape room that we tried, we had to put our hands inside what seemed like a frozen animal to extract a clue. We were obviously terrified. We tossed a coin to decide who will do it. After the game, we laughed off our foolishness. Unfortunately, we missed the timer by a few seconds.
