When I first went to the Escape Room, I was confident that I could do this. I play so many strategy games online and watch so many detective/thriller shows; I probably am too skilled for it.
To my amusement, I was not even a beginner-level skilled for this. The first thing that I observed and got me intrigued was the amazing codes and lock that the room had to offer. Well, of course, I was familiar with some escape room codes. But mostly, they were new. I had no hands-on experience, and so I had no clue what to do.

Here is a sneak peek into a few escape room codes and locks my friends and I have encountered in the past. You can take these as "getting you started hacks" for an escape room, especially if this is your first time.
The Lock
The most obvious kind of lock that these games use is the typical lock we are all aware of. These could open doors, mystery boxes, the path to the next clue, or maybe the escape room door itself.
The locks get unlocked in various ways:
KEY could be the Key
The most common type of escape room lock is the padlock with a key. These keys are usually hidden away in drawers, inside books, beneath a vase, and so on (I won't give away the reallocation, of course).
The key is usually used only once and would open a single lock. Smart tip - Once you have used the key, leave it in the lock so you do not fumble upon it again.
Key is actually NUMBERS
Numerical locks are standard too. Like the ones where you punch in a 4-digit code. Though a simple lock, the question here is 'What is the number?'.
The answer to that is found in some puzzles that yield a number or code or maybe something the coordinator mentioned before they let you in. Were you listening?
Key in the L.E.T.T.E.R.S
These are like the digital locks, but with secret words as the passcode. Most of them have discs in them. You rotate the discs to get a specific arrangement of letters that opens the lock. Or it may be a punch in the password kinds.
The word may be a solution to some riddle you may have solved, or something related to the most commonly appearing prop of the room. You have to figure that out.
Some word locks may be voice automated too. Speak out the password, and TADA!
Directions to Lead its Way
This is an interesting lock to be included, as they themselves are so puzzling. I got this one and genuinely had no clue how it worked. Thank god, I had smarter people on the team too.
During the game, you may be finding directions hidden in the clues for the answer. Once you have them, slide the disk in the center of the lock in the direction of your choosing. It could be Up-Down-Left-Right or North-South-East-West.
These were just the regular "I know this one" locks that we all have seen and are easy to crack. A beginner escape room experience may be.
Be alert. It gets crazier from here. The most important thing they are testing you on is LOGIC.
'Does this make sense?' kind of Puzzles Logic-based challenges are very common in escape rooms. These don't involve physical labor or movement of props; instead, they require mental work to figure out what to do next.
These logic-based challenges are often used in combination with different types of locks.
These puzzles could be found anywhere, in patterns, under the table, on props. These require logical thinking and application and nothing more.
It could include numbers and texts. Hey, you do not need a degree in Maths or English to be able to solve this. Just your common sense and logic are more than enough to figure out the lock combination. You are multiple people in the room.
Think crosswords, addition-subtractions, jumble words, missing words.
These require basic observation and logic put together to decipher the answer.
It could also involve lights and sounds. Where did that sound come from? Could lead to a solution. There could be Morse code taps and beats. Or the flickering lights may be a code."
Unusually lit spaces are hints calling out to you. And in the sounds may lie answers. Observe and Listen. This is the real part of the game. The journey to the clue. The feeling of excitement of getting there, so close.
These logic puzzles could be visual too. The room's design isn't just for dramatic effect. They incorporate visual patterns into the design of the room. Do you see a mysterious pattern of dashes and dots scribbled on the walls?
Look for clues literally everywhere, in pictures and frames on the wall, under the table, over the fan, behind the couch, just about anywhere. What seems ordinary may, in fact, be a smartly placed clue.
Some logic puzzles could be hidden in plain sight. That is the real test of knowledge. Pay detailed attention to repeated patterns.
Does the book rack have seven copies of a single book, while the rest of the books are singles? And are there seven strikes on the wall too. Something fishy there for sure.
Keep the theme of the room in mind while making observations.
Physical Puzzles
Now this one is really obvious and will be a part of almost all experiences. Once your brain work is done, it is time the body kicks in. The hands need to execute what the mind just figured out.
You saw small pieces of ropes hung across the room. Logic says it has to be a clue, and many small pieces make one big piece; maybe they have to be put together. It is time to get physical now.
Do you see small ropes hanging about the room? Maybe you need to tie them up. There may be a hook waiting for you, high up the wall, to be pulled on, opening a secret passage to the final mystery.
Moving around objects, pushing doors, arranging props in a pattern, breaking windows, turning dials several times are just a few examples.
These challenges add complexity to the game as you can't always identify them as a clue since they don't involve a locked box or something obvious.
You may have to change arrangements of props in the room or be techy and figure out how to use mirrors to deflect lasers. A sensible link to the next move will always be involved.
There can be so many other ways the game tricks and tests you. Ideas from famous movies can be a great catch.
- Metal latches that open underground bunkers
- Walk-in closets leading to a hidden room
- Laser light revealing paths to follow
- Magnifying glass and a match stick, you get it right?
No matter how many ideas, each test your logical application and physical strength. All in sixty minutes.
Bring logic and muscle for this game, and you are sorted unless the timer scares you. Then logic could take a while to kick in.
Escape rooms offer a thrilling experience for all kinds of game lovers and adventure seekers. Setting off the right pieces in the right order, and Tada! Stage cleared.
And once you are there, notice the different kinds of puzzles and codes they put you through. I am sure they have more crazy puzzles every time you visit. And when you see them, no matter how weird, I want to know.
