There is one person who makes the one hour of gaming in an Escape Room a marvelous experience: The Gamemaster.

Right from the moment a player steps onto the premises till they are seen off, he is the real star of your game room. This person can take the ordinary to extraordinary in a matter of few words.

The Escape Room Gamemaster's role is a multi-facet one and can be heavy to pull off sometimes. He is of paramount importance and in all possible ways responsible for enhancing the game-time experience exponentially.

He may be with you in the room as a guide or as a character. He may also be outside the room as the voice in your ears. But he is there all the time, keeping an eye on your progress and, most importantly, not letting that energy drop.

What is it like working a an an escape room? You get to Enhance The Game-Time

His mischievous mood can add unseen twists to the game, making the whole idea even better than you hoped for. He is the skill master who knows when to interfere and twist the plot.

I have been a gamemaster for many teams. Dawning this role takes passion more than skill to begin with. If the passion is there, the ability can be worked on.

If you want to bag this role, then you need more than just the love for the game:

7 ways to dawn the role

Knowing if you have it in you?

Being a gamemaster is not just any other profession. It is a profile you need to have a passion for.

If you love interacting with people, are really easy to get along with, know how to make someone feel comfortable in a new space, and good at spontaneous jokes, then you may be up for this role.

Spontaneous Switch

Crucial for this role is to be able to switch from being the players' partner in crime to be their guide to the game.

As an escape room master, you are expected not just to keep the spirits high but also to keep the players informed of safety procedures. From waiver forms to in-room safety instructions, all need to be conveyed to participants, but in a way, the game's spirit does not begin to vanish.

How you pitch it to them is your creative efforts of keeping the game spirit alive as well as balancing it out with the serious stuff.

Pump it up

Well, the most essential task is not to let the energy drop at any point. Whether your role is to be a part of the game with your team or to brief and de-brief them, you are solely responsible for keeping the energy going.

You are their storyteller. Just how a good director takes his audience on a journey in 2 hours, you are their guide for the next 60 minutes and more.

Being upbeat gives you room for creativity. You can mess around with your team once in a bit and laugh with them when they find out they were played.

Boo out the scary ones, poke at the focused ones, mess it up a little. That is the whole point of the game - To have a memorable time.

What these needs are your skills in expression and body-language reading. Training, exposure, and experience can get you there. Understanding the excitement of a 6-year-old to that of a 96-year-old will take a while for sure. But this part just cannot be ignored.

Having a natural instinct for it will work to your advantage.

Manage the Unexpected

As a Gamemaster, you need to know the game in and out what clues are placed where, the sequence of the puzzles, right moves, wrong moves, role of props, and more.

Another crucial thing to know is some great jokes around the storyline. They come in handy, trust me. Many times you are responsible for lightening up the mood of the game.

Also, each team will play the game in a unique style. Any unexpected move in the game that may look like a mistake by the host can be managed and taken advantage of by a witty Gamemaster. He can make it look like it was always meant to be a part of the game.

Make a Bond

Then comes getting to know your team. Have them fill out a form in advance of the day of their booking. Could you get to know little details about them? Like when is their birthday, one funny incident the group connects on, an embarrassing moment, their jobs, their strengths, and their weaknesses according to them.

These little things are useful while the game is on. You can connect the movements in that game room to one of their shared memory, and that is 30 seconds of nostalgia or a laughter riot in there.

Such things not only make the escape room exciting but also makes the team enjoy your role as their gamemaster. This is a good thing for you.

Personal involvement goes a long way. Greet them with first names when they get there and be there with them in the champion moment. The gamemaster has to be their best friend for those sixty minutes and more.

Know how much to say

Yes, you have to be their best friend in the game, but hey, you have to know how much to reveal about that room and when to do so. Your intro can hold specific hints to make the team feel like you are on their side.

Yet once the game begins, you can judge if the team is capable of getting to the escape by themselves, then you have to reveal as little as possible.

Not all teams may need all the hints you have prepared for them. Act out the story to create the atmosphere and then let them follow their minds.

Enjoy it with them

Most of all you have to remember to have fun. If you do not enjoy the role you dawn, your team players will not too. Who likes a grumpy voice in their heads? Being in the role and stayed pumped up increases the team's energy also.

Be ready with their trophy once they make an escape. Take pictures and give them deserving titles. Show them how they will be going up on the wall of winners.

Make use of this happy moment by promoting your next theme and giving them offers. All without sounding too sale-sy.

Final Outcome

Being a gamemaster is not always an easy job. Being sensitive to the different age groups of players and making sure everyone has a wonderful time is no less than being a great magician.

To be one who can pull off all his tricks smoothly and leave his audience in awe of him is a complex role, but an interesting one.

However, if you are someone with a high energy drive, then this is a role that you would immerse yourself in…

It has its own advantages on the one taking up the role too. It opens you up as a person in so many ways.

It makes you patient and observant, calm and sensible, witty and balanced.

There is so much to learn, and undeniably this is a must experience.

I recommend, leave your team with a connection and experience that is unforgettable, and they will keep coming back for more. Be their magician.
